SCSSC Player of the season 2007/08

Despite the short notice, we had a very good turnout of voters for our player of the season poll. The results were:

  1. Liam Lawrence (74%)
  2. Ricardo Fuller (18%)
  3. Ryan Shawcross (6%)
  4. Mamady Sidebe (3%)

Thank you to all who voted (we'll try not to be so rushed next year!)

Player sponsorship presentation

A party of eight Southern Stokies enjoyed hospitality in the Waddington Suite at the Ipswich match. The photos below show Ricardo Fuller presenting SCSSC’s sponsored shirt to Steve Heath and his mum (who was chuffed to bits I hear). Below Mama Sidebe presents his shirt, sponsored by Jeff Lea, to Norman Croucher.

Oatcake mesageboard ‘relocated’

Most Oatcake messageboard devotees will have sussed this by now but just in case you have not: it can now be found at http://oatcakefanzine.proboards27.com. The reason behind this temporary move is that recent changes aimed at ‘improving’ the Rivals’ network have rendered it much worse! All of the regulars have decanted to the new location including the infamous Hudsongod, now reincarnated as ‘Kinnell’.

Coachmakers Arms in Hanley - petition against closure

The Coachmakers Arms in Hanley is under the threat of demolition due to development. If you do not know the pub it a cracking, friendly little place with four individual rooms, the way proper pubs used to be before they were “themed”, but a lot of people choose to be served at the end of the bar in the corridor. You could call this the fifth room. It is a two minute down bank walk from Hanley bus station, just before you get to the roundabout. This makes it very convenient if you have to wait for a bus. I know it’s not football related but it is another bit of how Stoke-on-Trent used to be that will be gone forever.

www.thecoachmakers.co.uk will takes you to the Coachmakers Arms website which has an onward link to the petition to save it. www.xforce.co.uk/phpPETITION will take you straight to the petition.

Where the Hell is Dudley Kernick?

I would imagine that many of our older members will remember Dudley Kernick who was Stoke City's commercial manager is the 70s and early 80s. You may even have read his autobiography: 'Who the Hell Was Dudley Kernick' (hence the headline!)

Dudley has just been in touch with Monica Hartland and sends best wishes to all SCSSC members, especially those he got to know during his time as commercial manager at the club.

He has lived in Florida for some time, returning to Barlaston each year and seeing the odd game at the Brit. This year, together with his two daughters, he launched a British Pub The Queen Mary' in Jupiter, Florida, 19 miles south of West Palm Beach. It did well throughout the World Cup, being themed around football with memorabilia and even messages of support from Fergie, Banksie and even Richard Branson (?). It shows all of Sky's televised matches and serves 'British' food.

They have a map on the wall where any visitors from Blighty are asked to stick in a pin. To date there is only only one from the Potteries!

Anyone interested in obtaining further details should get in touch with Monica (if you do not have her contact details, contact SCSSC and we will forward the message.)

SCSSC Sunday Football - Veteran's match!

For 2007/08 we are also considering putting together a SCSSC 'veterans' football team for a one-off match. Believe it or not, we have already had quite a bit of interest in this! If you are a former SCSSC player then that is great but it doesn't matter if you are not. By veteran we are talking about 35+ (no upper limit - Norman is interested and he is 67!) Ideally we would like a big squad so we can make plenty of substitutions! We would like to stress that this is meant to be a laugh rather than a serious sporting event. It goes without saying that we will be retiring to the pub afterwards for some serious post-match analysis. If you are interested (no commitment - yet) please contact us. We'll keep you posted on developments.
